Vietnam travel essentials: what to check before you leave

On your first visit to Vietnam, you do not need to cover the north, central region and south in one trip. With only 3 to 5 days, choosing one region and nearby sights usually makes for a more relaxed visit. With 7 to 10 days, you can consider combining two regions, but factor in domestic flights, luggage and travel days.

Entry requirements and documents
Check your visa eligibility against your nationality, passport and full flight itinerary. Another traveler's visa exemption may not apply to you. Your name, passport number and entry date must match the approval documents. Keep digital copies and backups.
Time and payments
Vietnam uses UTC+7, which is 1 hour behind Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia. The main local currency is the Vietnamese dong (VND). Check each merchant's and product's terms for card acceptance, payment and cancellation conditions.
Transport and luggage
Plan city travel, airport transfers and intercity transfers separately. When booking a vehicle, provide the number of passengers and bags, child-seat requirements, flight details and hotel location. Private car hire usually includes a driver, but that does not mean a guide is also included.
Travel companions and pace
When traveling with older adults or young children, limit hotel changes, long drives and midday walks. Assess whether motorbike rides, high-altitude cable cars, tunnels and sea activities suit everyone in your group. Do not choose an itinerary on photos alone.
Seasons and backup plans
Northern and southern Vietnam have different climates, so there is no single best month for the whole country. Sea conditions, heavy rain, cable car notices and attraction announcements can affect activities. Prepare indoor alternatives in the same area when planning outdoor days.
Connectivity and reservations
Check whether your phone supports eSIM, how your data SIM is activated and whether you need voice calls. Confirm bookings early for peak seasons, long holiday weekends, Tet, cruises and popular restaurants. Supplier confirmation and booking vouchers determine the final arrangements.

Vietnam travel costs: understand how prices are calculated

When comparing prices, check the pricing unit and inclusions before looking at the total. A private tour's reference price per person, the total charge for a group, a one-way transfer and full-day car hire are not directly comparable. The product listings below link to packages on the official website. Check airfare, single-room charges, optional admission tickets and special-date charges individually.

Where to go in Vietnam: choosing among four destinations

Head north for history, mountains and bays; choose central Vietnam for old towns and beaches, Ho Chi Minh City for urban life and the Mekong Delta, or Phu Quoc for resorts and family time. Compare attractions, food, seasons and bookable services together to build a practical route.

Central Vietnam | Beaches, old towns and mountain scenery

Da Nang and Hoi An

For a first trip to central Vietnam, use Da Nang as your transport base, set aside a day for Ba Na Hills, then spend a night in Hoi An or visit for an evening walk. Beach hotels, old-town strolls and mountain cable cars each call for a different pace. Around 5 days makes it easier to leave time to rest.

Top attractions

Golden Bridge at Ba Na Hills

The bridge supported by giant sculpted hands, framed by mountain views, is an iconic Ba Na Hills sight and pairs well with a walk around the park. Fog can obscure the mountains, and cable cars are weather-dependent. Clear mountain views cannot be guaranteed.

My Khe Beach

A good place for an early walk, a seaside meal or some unstructured holiday time. Check lifeguard flags and local notices before entering the water. When waves are rough, choose an ocean-view cafe or city activity instead of swimming.

Hoi An Ancient Town

Explore the old streets, assembly halls and riverside on foot, then combine dinner with lantern-lit streets in the evening. Hoi An is outside central Da Nang, so allow time for transfers. Avoid wading through floodwater during flooding or heavy rain, and adjust your route according to local notices.

Must-try food

Mi Quang noodles with toppings and fresh herbs

Mi Quang noodles (Mì Quảng)

Rice noodles with a little broth, fresh herbs and a choice of meat toppings make a good introduction to central Vietnamese flavors. Choose chicken, shrimp or another version from the menu, adding chili and other toppings separately.

Live seafood tanks at a Da Nang seafood restaurant

Seafood and seaside dining

Seaside restaurants often offer fish, shrimp and shellfish cooked in several ways. Before ordering, confirm the weighing unit, cooking method, preparation charge and total price. Mention any allergies or dietary restrictions in advance.

When to visit and rainy-season alternatives

When to visit and rainy-season alternatives

For beaches and outdoor activities, start by comparing March to August. For more comfortable temperatures, consider March to May, while checking the weather for your travel year.

Wet-season limitations

Around September to December, pay particular attention to rain, strong winds and tropical cyclone updates. Flooding can also affect Hoi An. Mountain views, cable cars, sea activities and outdoor shows may be affected.

Alternative plans

Nearby alternatives include the Museum of Cham Sculpture, indoor markets, cooking experiences and cafes. Follow operating notices for Ba Na Hills and beach activities; rain does not mean every facility will remain open as usual.

Seasonal information source

Suggested trip length and route

5 days, 4 nights: arrive in Da Nang and rest, visit Ba Na Hills, explore Hoi An Ancient Town, enjoy Da Nang's beachfront and city, then head home. With 6 days, add another night in Hoi An, a craft activity or more beach time. There is no need to change cities every day.

Get to know Vietnam at an easy pace through Hanoi's Old Quarter, lakes and historic sites. Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh are extensions that require intercity travel. Avoid squeezing city sightseeing and a full-day bay trip into the same day.

Top attractions

Must-try food

Hanoi beef pho with fresh herb accompaniments

Pho noodle soup (Phở)

Beef or chicken pho showcases each eatery's approach to broth, rice noodles and herbs. It works well for breakfast or a simple meal. Confirm the meat and toppings when ordering; flavors vary from one shop to another.

Hanoi bun cha with grilled pork, rice noodles, herbs and dipping sauce

Grilled pork with rice noodles (Bún chả)

Grilled pork, rice noodles, herbs and dipping sauce arrive separately, so you can balance each bite to taste. Lunch near the Old Quarter fits easily into a route taking in the lake, historic sites and cafes.

When to visit and rainy-season alternatives

When to visit and rainy-season alternatives

For city travel, start by comparing March to April and September to November. Spring and autumn still feel different. Winter can be damp and cold, while summer is hotter, so do not pack solely on the assumption that Vietnam is tropical.

Wet-season limitations

Around May to September, watch for heat, showers and storms. Ha Long Bay sailings may be canceled because of sea conditions. Winter fog can also obscure the scenery, so clear bay views cannot be promised on every departure.

Alternative plans

City alternatives include Hoa Lo Prison Relic, the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, coffee experiences and water puppet shows. Check opening hours for the day. If bay sailings are suspended, customer service will coordinate alternatives under accommodation, transport and supplier policies. Free changes are not guaranteed in advance.

Seasonal information source

Suggested trip length and route

5 days, 4 nights: explore Hanoi, take an overnight Ha Long Bay cruise, return to Hanoi for Old Quarter walks, then head home. Add a day for Ninh Binh. For Sapa, compare a separate 6-day route to avoid repeated long drives on a short northern Vietnam trip.

Recommended tours and services

Southern Vietnam | City history, street food and delta experiences

Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta

Start in Ho Chi Minh City to combine historic buildings, local food and lively nightlife. Cu Chi Tunnels and the Mekong Delta each require additional travel time. Plan city half-days, countryside day trips and evening experiences separately for a more relaxed visit.

Must-try food

A Vietnamese banh mi sandwich with iced coffee

Ho Chi Minh City broken rice with a grilled pork chop and egg

Broken rice (Cơm tấm)

Broken rice with a grilled pork chop and side dishes is a common meal in Ho Chi Minh City. Check menu prices before adding an egg, meatloaf or other extras. It fits easily into a walk around District 1 or the area where you are staying.

When to visit and rainy-season alternatives

When to visit and rainy-season alternatives

For drier walking weather, compare December to April. December to January is usually a little cooler, while conditions can be hotter around April. Leave time for a midday break.

Wet-season limitations

Showers are more common around May to November. Localized street flooding can affect transfers and motorbike tours. Mekong Delta trips, cruises and other outdoor activities depend on supplier decisions and conditions on the day.

Alternative plans

Consider city museums, indoor markets, cafes or a booked Vietnamese hair washing and massage session. Check whether a motorbike tour should be rescheduled in heavy rain. Do not travel through thunderstorms or flooded streets just to finish a sightseeing list.

Seasonal information source

Suggested trip length and route

4 to 5 days: explore city history and food, set aside a day for Cu Chi or the Mekong Delta, take an Ao Dai motorbike tour or have dinner on the Saigon River, then leave time to relax before departure. With 6 days, consider Can Tho and its floating markets, allowing for early starts and an overnight stay outside the city.

Recommended tours and services

Island holidays | Cable car rides in the south, family theme parks and seafood night markets

Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc suits a resort stay with a few carefully chosen activities. The north, Duong Dong and the south are far apart, so plan by area around your hotel. With only 4 to 5 days, there is no need to travel between the north and south every day.

When to visit and rainy-season alternatives

When to visit and rainy-season alternatives

For beaches and sea activities, start by comparing the November to April dry season. Rain is still possible as seasons change, and actual sea conditions matter more than a seasonal label.

Wet-season limitations

Around May to October, expect a higher chance of rain, rough seas and changes to island-hopping trips. Even without continuous rain, underwater visibility and wave conditions may be unsuitable for snorkeling.

Alternative plans

Replace sea activities with cafes, indoor exhibits, rest or facilities confirmed open near your hotel. Leave flexibility for the day before or after, and avoid scheduling island hopping just before your flight off the island with no room for changes.

Seasonal information source

Suggested trip length and route

4 to 5 days: plan Duong Dong and the north around your hotel location, visit the southern cable car and Sunset Town, relax at the hotel or enjoy sea activities if weather permits, then head home. Check entry eligibility against your passport and full route, including connections and travel between islands. Do not assume every visit is visa-free.

Recommended tours and services

Phu Quoc itineraries are quoted on request. Share your dates, group size, accommodation and preferred activities so our team can confirm available services, inclusions and a tailored quote. There is currently no fixed-price package; the custom-tour link below is an inquiry starting point, not a Phu Quoc price based on another city.

More destinations and trip extensions

For a longer trip, extend a Hanoi stay to the mountain town of Sapa, or combine Da Lat and Nha Trang on a southern Vietnam holiday. Leave room on travel days, and allow for weather changes when planning mountain roads, sea activities and high-altitude cable cars.

Vietnam visas and airport fast track

Before comparing processing speeds, check your nationality, passport, length of stay and number of entries. The figures below are reference prices for services on the official visa and fast-track pages, not government visa fees. Ask customer service to confirm eligibility for the service and the full number of working days required.

  • Standard and urgent e-visas: reference prices on the official website start at 1,170,000 VND, with standard, 3-day, 2-day and 1-day options. The page does not guarantee a fixed processing time for standard applications. Working days, requests for additional documents, public holidays and official systems can all affect processing.
  • Super-urgent e-visas: reference prices on the official website start at 1,989,000 VND, with half-day, 4-hour, 2-hour and 1-hour options listed. Passport details, application timing and service eligibility must be confirmed first. These options do not guarantee approval at any time.
  • VIP airport fast track: the official website lists a reference price of 800,000 VND / person. Ask about availability at the main international airports serving Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City. Fast track does not provide a visa exemption or replace valid entry documents. Confirm meet-and-assist arrangements and eligible flight times in advance.
  • Prepare your passport information page, a compliant photo, entry date and airport, length of stay and number of entries. Processing time starts only after all required information is complete and confirmed. Calendar days cannot simply be counted as working days.

Golf holidays in Vietnam: combine courses with time to relax

Compare 4-day and 5-day Ho Chi Minh City golf holidays by course, number of rounds and time to relax. Then confirm weekday or holiday play, room types, golf-bag luggage and transfers. Current packages are listed below; ask separately about other cities or group sizes.

Reference prices below are per person. Please check availability if you are traveling alone; your quote depends on group size and room type.

Private cars and airport transfers in Vietnam: choose your city, then your service

Vehicle options and mileage conditions differ between Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City. Airport pickups and drop-offs are one-way services, while full-day car hire has separate time and distance limits. Confirm whether intercity routes such as Ha Long Bay, Hoi An or Mui Ne can be covered by the original package.

There are currently 3 regional private car products listed. Reference prices for one-way airport transfers and full-day car hire are shown separately for each region below. When booking, provide your flight, terminal, addresses, number of adults and children, and number of bags. The advertised seat count does not mean the vehicle can also fit the same number of large suitcases.

Drivers and guides are separate services. Current car hire descriptions specify a local driver. Confirm availability and pricing in advance for language assistance, guided sightseeing, child seats or transfers at special times.

Private guides in Vietnam: confirm the region, language and focus

Explore at your own pace with a private guide for history, food, family outings or city walks. The 3 services below cover northern, central and southern Vietnam. Your preferred language is subject to availability for your travel dates.

Share your preferred language, sightseeing area, date and service duration before booking. Our team will check the guide's availability; review the confirmed language and service scope in your booking confirmation.

Current product reference prices are for 8 hours of service within the city. Check the product details and confirmation to see whether vehicles, admission tickets and other costs are extra. For 10 hours or intercity service, select the corresponding option separately.

Ho Chi Minh City Ao Dai motorbike tours with local women riders

Local women riders wearing ao dai take you through Saigon's neighborhoods, linking city sights, lanes and food in a 3-hour experience. A rider drives while you travel as the passenger; inexperienced travelers are not asked to ride a motorbike themselves.

Tell us your preferred language and interests when booking, and confirm whether meals are included, pickup and drop-off coverage, and riding arrangements. For young children, travelers with mobility needs or anyone who cannot comfortably ride as a passenger, ask about suitable alternatives first.

In thunderstorms, heavy rain or street flooding, customer service and the service team should assess any changes. Helmets and on-site safety instructions take priority over photo stops.

Custom Vietnam trips: compare packages with accommodation and those where you book your own

Having accommodation already booked and wanting hotels arranged for you are different needs. The official website currently offers 2 custom products, both of which can be starting points for a quote based on your dates, group size and service requirements.

"Exclusive Vietnam-wide Itinerary Planning" includes the accommodation arrangements listed in the product. With "Tailor-made Independent Travel," you book your own flights and accommodation, while transport and guides are planned according to the package. Actual hotels, vehicles, service languages and optional extras are subject to written confirmation.

Provide your dates, arrival and departure cities, number of travelers and their ages, accommodation needs, budget range, must-see places and anything you would prefer to leave out. Confirm airfare inclusions, child pricing and cancellation conditions individually before paying.

Special experiences: the Mekong Delta and dinner on the Saigon River

For another memorable experience alongside your main itinerary, compare a Mekong Delta day trip with a Saigon River dinner cruise. Timing, transport and pricing units differ, so choose according to where you are staying and how much energy you will have that day.

The 2 special experiences currently listed appear below. Shared and private Mekong Delta tours are priced separately. Choose a cruise by boat type, dining package and departure date. Meals, performances and routes depend on the arrangements confirmed at booking.

Vietnam travel FAQ

Which city is best for a first trip to Vietnam?

Consider Hanoi for a historic capital, mountains and bays; Da Nang and Hoi An for beaches and an old town; Ho Chi Minh City for urban life, food and the Mekong Delta; or Phu Quoc for island resorts and family facilities. Choosing one region around your dates and trip length is more practical than trying to cover the north, central region and south at once.

How many days should I spend in Vietnam?

Choose one region for 3 to 5 days. With 5 to 6 days, you can add a nearby city or an overnight cruise. With 7 to 10 days, consider combining two regions, remembering that domestic flights and travel days also take time. There is no fixed answer that suits every traveler.

What is the difference between independent travel, a private tour and a custom trip?

Independent travelers arrange their own accommodation and transport. A private tour follows the confirmed group arrangements and itinerary, while a custom trip is adjusted to your needs first. Check each product for shared-tour arrangements, accommodation, service language and inclusions rather than relying on its name alone.

Do the reference prices include flights?

Please check whether flights are included in your chosen tour or service before booking. Confirm airfare, baggage, single-room charges, admission tickets, meals and optional extras against the product details and quote before paying.

Can I visit Vietnam during the rainy season?

Assess your options by region, activity and comfort with risk. Rainy season does not mean all-day rain every day, but canceled sailings, strong winds, flooding and limited mountain visibility can affect plans. Keep alternatives for sea and outdoor activities, and follow operating and safety announcements.

Is travel to Phu Quoc always visa-free?

The destination name alone is not enough to determine eligibility. Entry requirements depend on nationality, passport, the full flight route and whether you will visit other parts of Vietnam. Check official Vietnamese requirements before paying and before departure, with help from customer service if needed.

Does private car hire include a guide?

Not necessarily. Current private car products mainly cover the vehicle and driver. Guides, language assistance, admission tickets and intercity arrangements depend on the options selected. Confirm driver and guide responsibilities, service languages and costs separately.

Can I arrange a guide in a language other than Chinese?

You can request your preferred language when booking, but customer service must confirm availability by region, date and the guide's schedule. Do not assume every language and time slot is available. Have the language and service scope recorded in your confirmation.

How can I get a quote for a Vietnam trip that suits me?

Provide your dates, arrival and departure cities, group size, companions' ages, accommodation needs, budget range and must-see sights. Customer service will then confirm route feasibility, inclusions and exclusions, payment terms and cancellation conditions. Book once these details are confirmed.

How can I plan a comfortable Vietnam trip with children or older relatives?

Limit hotel changes and long drives, leave midday for lunch and rest, and choose sights to suit everyone’s energy. Confirm vehicle size, luggage and child-seat needs in advance. Check whether tunnels, motorbike rides and sea activities are suitable for each traveler.
