Vietnam Nightlife: Evenings in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi

For Saigon skyline views, plan an evening around Nguyen Hue Walking Street and a rooftop bar. For street-side beers and a livelier crowd, consider Bui Vien in Ho Chi Minh City or Ta Hien in Hanoi. You do not have to drink: a walk beside the Saigon River or Hoan Kiem Lake, followed by dinner and a café, works just as well.

When planning your first night out in Vietnam, think about music volume, seating, how the venue charges and the journey back to your hotel. Friends looking for a party and families travelling with children or older relatives do not need the same itinerary, or a string of bars in one evening.

Conversation and city views: In Ho Chi Minh City, look around Nguyen Hue and Dong Khoi for restaurants and scenic bars. In Hanoi, combine a lakeside walk with a restaurant or bar where you can sit comfortably.

Live music and a drink: Check the evening programme before deciding when to eat. A live band, a jazz performance and a DJ-led club night can have very different sound levels, seating and entry conditions.

A busy bar street: Try Bui Vien in Ho Chi Minh City or Ta Hien in Hanoi. Walk through, read the menus and choose whether to stay; an invitation from a staff member is not an obligation to enter.

Ho Chi Minh City nightlife: Nguyen Hue views or a lively Bui Vien evening

Nguyen Hue, Dong Khoi and Bach Dang: a walk after dinner

Nguyen Hue Walking Street and Bui Vien offer different evenings. Nguyen Hue has an open pedestrian space, city buildings and people out for a stroll; nearby Dong Khoi has hotels, restaurants and bars. Continue towards Bach Dang riverfront to combine dinner with Saigon River views. A guide to central Saigon after dark

Couples and first-time visitors can book dinner first, then decide how far to walk according to the weather. With children or older relatives, comfortable seating, toilets and a practical pick-up point matter more than fitting in several viewpoints. Roads still run beside the riverfront: use pedestrian crossings and avoid stopping at the edge of traffic for photographs.

Saigon Saigon Rooftop Bar: an evening built around live music

For city views from a hotel bar, consider Saigon Saigon Rooftop Bar at Caravelle Saigon, 19–23 Lam Son Square. It opens daily from 16:00. The live band plays Monday–Saturday, 20:00–22:30, and Sunday, 20:00–22:00. Programmes can change, so confirm the evening's music and seating when reserving.

If music is the main reason for visiting, eat earlier and leave time to enjoy a set. If you only want the view and a drink, there is no need to stay until the band finishes. Ask about outdoor or window-side seating, a rain alternative, minimum spend and dress requirements before booking.

Bui Vien: for friends who enjoy crowds and loud music

Bui Vien is in the Pham Ngu Lao backpacker area, with bars, dining and music close together and many venues open to the street. Choose it for a busy atmosphere rather than a quiet dinner or a long conversation. Travellers sensitive to noise, families with young children and anyone leaving early the next morning may prefer another area.

You do not need to reserve a table package simply to experience the street. Walk along it first and choose a venue with a clear menu, prices and seating rules. Agree on a meeting point and departure time with your friends, and identify a safe place for a vehicle to stop before everyone heads off separately.

For dinner, riverfront walks and performances, see our Ho Chi Minh City evening guide. A walking route and a bar-street visit do not have to happen on the same night.

Hanoi nightlife: Hoan Kiem Lake, Ta Hien beers and live jazz

Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter: an evening without alcohol

Hoan Kiem Lake is a useful starting point for dinner, a walk and dessert. You can see the illuminated Huc Bridge from the lakeside, then head towards the Old Quarter's restaurants, shops and cafés. If you want some shopping time, look into the weekend night market, without making the entire evening depend on it. Explore Hanoi's Old Quarter and lake

If you are staying in the Old Quarter, choose one side of the lake for a leisurely walk after dinner. If your hotel is farther away, save a return pick-up point first. With a pushchair or older relatives, avoid unnecessary detours through narrow lanes and stop somewhere with seats when needed. Crowds or access restrictions may mean using a different pick-up location.

Ta Hien: a street-side beer in the Old Quarter

Beer stalls, small bars and low stools give Ta Hien a recognisable evening setting. It is an option for a beer with friends and watching people pass by. For a quieter conversation or more space between tables, consider booking an indoor restaurant or bar instead.

Before sitting down, ask whether drinks are priced by glass, bottle or another serving size, and whether snacks cost extra. Street-side seating and toilet facilities vary. If you need chairs with backrests, step-free access or suitable seating for children, look around before choosing a table. A beer-street location does not mean every venue has the same prices or charging rules.

Le Club Bar: dinner and jazz instead of a bar crawl

For live jazz in Hanoi, consider Le Club Bar at Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi, 15 Ngo Quyen Street. Dinner runs from 18:00 to 23:00, with food orders closing at 22:30. Jazz is scheduled Tuesday–Sunday, 20:00–22:45: a band with a singer Tuesday–Saturday, and the band only on Sunday.

This is an evening to spend in one venue rather than rushing on to beer street. When booking dinner and music, ask about seating, the day's performance, the menu and charges. If conversation matters most, request a table farther from the stage; a jazz venue is not necessarily quiet throughout the performance.

For water puppetry or the Old Quarter night market, see our Hanoi evening guide. Choose the main activity before settling on a dinner location.

Vietnam bar costs: look beyond the price of one drink

Street-side beer, a hotel bar and a ticketed club night cannot be compared using one universal nightly budget. First decide whether you want a single drink, a performance or a reserved table. Then ask about entry and seating conditions as well as the menu prices.

Costs to confirm before sitting down or booking
ItemWhat to ask
Food and drinksIs the price per glass, bottle or jug? Are tax and service included? Check the serving size when ordering another round too.
Seating and minimum spendIs the minimum per person or per table? Does it vary by seat? Can a deposit be used against food and drinks?
Events and admissionDoes this evening require a ticket? Which drinks, if any, are included? Charges can vary between venues and nights.
Return transportCheck the full distance from your accommodation. Estimate outward and return journeys separately rather than assuming a fixed app fare.

For a group, agree on the table's spending limit and who will place orders. Do not open a bottle before confirming its price. Check quantities, tax and service on the bill and keep the receipt. If someone is not drinking, ask about alcohol-free options and minimum-spend rules rather than assuming everyone must share the alcohol bill.

A useful reservation question is: “There are this many of us, and we would like to arrive at this time. What are the minimum spend, taxes, service charge, deposit and cancellation terms? Does tonight have an event ticket or any other compulsory charge?” Prices and programmes are subject to the venue's confirmation or booking terms.

An unhurried evening in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi

These are itinerary suggestions, not venue opening hours or fixed tours. Allow for dinner and the journey home, then choose walking, music or a bar street as the main activity. Pick one route in the city you are visiting.

Ho Chi Minh City: city views after dinner, or a night of music

Family or alcohol-free evening: dinner downtown → Nguyen Hue → Bach Dang riverfront
Eat first and adjust the walk to the group's energy and the weather. If it rains, stay at the restaurant or another nearby indoor venue and skip the riverfront section.
Live-band evening: early dinner → Saigon Saigon → hotel
Plan around your reservation and the evening programme rather than adding a bar street elsewhere in the city. Arrive earlier for photographs and ask what happens to outdoor reservations if it rains.
Friends visiting Bui Vien: dinner → look along the street → choose one venue
Check that everyone is comfortable with the volume and crowds. Agree before leaving how anyone who wants an earlier night will return, rather than leaving them waiting alone beside the road.

Hanoi: a lake and Old Quarter evening, or time for jazz and dinner

First visit: Old Quarter dinner → Hoan Kiem Lake → coffee or dessert
Choose somewhere near your hotel or on the same side of the lake; there is no need to complete a full circuit. For the night market, check whether it is running and consider the crowd and everyone's energy.
A drink with friends: dinner → Ta Hien → hotel
Look at the seating and menu before deciding to stay. If you want to continue to a club, check its DJ programme, tickets, entry conditions and return transport separately. Street-side beers are not a nightclub reservation.
Jazz and dinner: reserve Le Club Bar → dine and listen
Choose an arrival time around the evening's programme. If your hotel is in another area, save its address and a pick-up point so you do not have to return to the Old Quarter to find a ride.

Night-time safety and getting back: prepare your ride and hotel address

Step inside a venue or away from traffic to check a map, take a photograph or book a car. Keep bags closed and in front of you. Buy your own drinks and keep them in sight; avoid alcohol of unknown origin, including untraceable home-distilled spirits. Alcohol containing methanol has caused serious illness and deaths in Vietnam, and cannot be identified by taste or smell. Vietnam travel safety advice

Book the complete return journey through an official app such as Grab or Xanh SM and check the number plate and driver before boarding. Do not rely on someone simply saying they are your app driver. Save a screenshot of your hotel's name and address and keep your phone charged. Stay in contact with your group; if you are alone, tell someone you trust where you are going and roughly when you plan to return.

For a pre-arranged family or group transfer, give the date, pick-up and drop-off points, latest finish time and any child-seat needs. Confirm waiting time, overtime, night supplements and where the vehicle can stop when agreeing the booking. Not every pedestrian-street entrance permits pick-up. Do not drive or ride a motorbike after drinking.

Vietnam nightlife questions

Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi for a first night out?

Choose the city already in your travel plans; there is no need to add a domestic flight just for bars. Ho Chi Minh City offers Nguyen Hue views, hotel bars and Bui Vien. Hanoi combines Hoan Kiem Lake, Old Quarter dining and beer street. Both work without alcohol.

Do bars and clubs in Vietnam always need reservations?

Policies vary. Contact the venue for particular view seats, group tables, live performances and special events. Even at a small street-side venue, check the menu and seating rules. Ask about admission age, ID, dress, minimum spend and deposits rather than applying another venue's policy.

Can women go out alone?

Choose dinner, music or a lakeside walk according to your own preferences, and leave any setting that makes you uncomfortable. Plan the return trip, do not let a stranger redirect you to another venue, and ask venue or hotel staff for help if something feels wrong. Neither a ride-hailing app nor a companion guarantees safety.

What if I prefer Da Nang or Hoi An to bars?

If central Vietnam is already on your itinerary, make dinner, a riverfront walk or the old town your evening activity instead of flying elsewhere for nightlife. See our Da Nang evening guide and Hoi An evening guide, then choose a route near your accommodation. A trip from Da Nang to Hoi An also needs a return plan.
