Southern Vietnam & Islands

Choose your city, delta, coast or island base before filling the days.

With four or five days, choose Ho Chi Minh City plus one excursion, or settle on a single island. Trying to fit city streets, the Mekong, sand dunes and an island into the same short holiday leaves little time to enjoy them. Seven or eight days gives two bases more breathing room. For Can Tho’s early floating market, stay there the night before; for Nam Du, include the journey to Rach Gia and any port-side overnight in your holiday.

Vung Tau and Mui Ne suit stays on the mainland coast. Phu Quoc, Con Dao and Nam Du each need their own arrival and island transport arrangements. Nha Trang lies on the South Central Coast and Da Lat in the Central Highlands; allow separate overnight stops and travel days for this extension. The durations below are suggestions, with arrival, departure and transfers counted as part of the holiday.

Keep a Saigon base; give Cu Chi its own outing

Allow two full days in Ho Chi Minh City for museums, neighbourhoods and coffee. Follow the Central Post Office, Dong Khoi, the Opera House exterior and Nguyen Hue on one day; choose a museum or Cho Lon's markets and temples on the other. Take an indoor lunch break during the hottest hours and use a ride between districts. The Ho Chi Minh City guide helps you choose a base and neighbourhoods.

Museums by day; Tan Dinh and Nguyen Hue as separate stops

  • For city history: choose Independence Palace for its architecture, interiors and grounds. If art is your priority, choose the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts instead. You need not visit every museum in a day; plan around the galleries open on your visit.
  • Allow a separate ride for the pink church: Tan Dinh Church is not beside Nguyen Hue. Combine its exterior with a nearby coffee stop, watch for traffic and keep worshippers' routes clear. Interior access follows the church's rules that day.
  • Keep Nguyen Hue for late afternoon or evening: sit down at a shop in the Cafe Apartments, then continue along the pedestrian street for a walk and dinner. Each business has its own hours and seating; a photographed view is not available from every shop.

Cu Chi suits visitors interested in wartime history. Choose the visitor area, above-ground walking and any underground section according to mobility and comfort in enclosed spaces. Young children or travellers with knee problems need not go into a tunnel. Include road travel, interpretation and lunch in that outing, then return to the same hotel. If you also want the Mekong, giving each a separate day reduces rushed transfers and boarding.

My Tho or Ben Tre for a day; Can Tho for an early start

Choose My Tho or Ben Tre if you want waterways and coconut-growing countryside, then return to your Saigon hotel that evening. Both involve changing between land and water transport. For children and older relatives, fewer boardings, shade and correctly fitting life jackets matter more than another small-island stop. Check the selected package for boats, meals, orchards and guiding. An orchard does not offer the same fruit for picking year-round.

For Can Tho’s early river market, use a two-day, one-night visit. Arrive on day one, have lunch and rest, then walk around Ninh Kieu in the evening. Leave at the time agreed with your boat operator next morning, have breakfast and a manageable waterway visit, then return to pack before travelling to Saigon. This is a working market: the number of trading boats and the atmosphere vary. Start with one day in the delta versus an overnight in Can Tho, then read the Cai Rang boat and breakfast guide.

For farmland rather than a river market, plan a separate Dong Thap visit with time for the road journey, accommodation and lotus fields. Ask the operator or landholder about visitor access, paths and actual flowering.

Vung Tau for a coastal city; Mui Ne for dunes and hotel time

Vung Tau works for a change of pace from Saigon: a seafront walk, a cultural stop such as the White Palace, lunch and a break before deciding on another stretch of coast. Check stairs and exposure before choosing a hilltop visit. A day return means accepting the road journey; stay overnight if sea air, a hotel and a leisurely dinner are the point. Vung Tau, Long Hai and Ho Tram have different hotel locations and transfer needs.

Give Mui Ne and Phan Thiet two or three nights when possible. Keep arrival day for the hotel and nearby beach. On the next day, place the dunes and fishing village at suitable times, with an indoor break between outings. An extra day can become a landscape excursion or simply a hotel day. Walking on sand, wind and an early sunrise start require energy; check safety and charges separately for activities such as quad bikes. With only five days and time wanted in Saigon, choose Mui Ne or the delta rather than two consecutive long-distance return trips.

Phu Quoc, Con Dao and Nam Du offer different holidays

Phu Quoc: choose the hotel area before the island itinerary

For beach hotels, meals out and a few activities, start with where to stay on Phu Quoc. Keep one base on a short stay. If northern attractions are your priority, avoid daily trips to the south. Four or five nights could give you a hotel-rest day, a southern activity day and time in another area, with light arrival and departure days. Confirm transfers with a provider operating on Phu Quoc.

A northern wildlife day, a southern cable-car day and an unhurried evening

  • A northern day with children: Vinpearl Safari Phu Quoc suits travellers who enjoy observing animals. Include walking, park transport, lunch and breaks in the same day; families with toddlers need not add an entire theme park. Follow staff instructions and do not feed or touch animals on your own.
  • A southern activity day: make the Hon Thom cable car and island activities the day's main outing. Check your ticket's inclusions, return cable-car operating times and meeting point. Bring a change of clothes for water activities and plan a comfortable break for companions who will not swim.
  • Sunset Town after the daytime outing: walk by the sea at Sunset Town and Kiss Bridge, then decide whether you have the energy for Kiss of the Sea. Avoid combining the northern safari, Hon Thom and an evening show in one day. Arrange the night-time ride back if your hotel is far away.

Weather or maintenance can change cable-car operations, evening shows and fireworks. Check Sun World Hon Thom operating and event information before buying, then confirm the date, session, seating, access and transfers. Whether the cable car, Kiss Bridge and a show are included depends on the package you select.

Con Dao: separate history, sea trips and conservation visits

Consider three or four nights for the coast, historical sites and national park. One day can focus on history and another on a suitable boat activity, subject to conditions, leaving space for rest and onward travel. Turtle and marine activities on Con Dao follow the national park’s registration, group and staff instructions. Nesting, hatching and places are not guaranteed. Do not independently approach or handle wildlife, or touch coral.

Nam Du: count Rach Gia and the return buffer too

Nam Du suits travellers willing to spend more time reaching fishing villages and smaller islands. Consider a night in Rach Gia, then two or three nights on the islands after a confirmed sailing; local island trips remain weather-dependent. Before paying, foreign-passport holders should ask the carrier, accommodation and relevant local authority to confirm current reception and document requirements for their nationality and itinerary, rather than relying on old permit advice. Severe seasickness, significant medical-support needs or an inflexible departure date may make another destination more suitable.

Phu Quoc’s usual beach-friendly period is roughly November to April, not a promise of sunshine or smooth water. Check Con Dao and Nam Du separately for wind, waves and operator notices. Return to your departure city with adjustable overnight time before the international flight. These three islands should not be assumed to form a direct island-hopping route. For a wider comparison, use the existing Vietnam islands and bays guide.

Five days for one side trip; seven or eight for a second base

  • Five days, four nights: city and delta. Arrive in Saigon, explore the city on day two, visit My Tho or Ben Tre on day three, choose Cu Chi or more city time on day four, and leave on day five. Keep all four nights in the city. To prioritise Can Tho instead, spend night three there and return to Saigon after the market on day four.
  • Seven days, six nights: city and Mui Ne. Spend three nights in Saigon, travel to Mui Ne on day four for two nights, then return to Saigon for the sixth night before departure. For more beach time, drop Cu Chi or lengthen the trip.
  • Eight days, seven nights: city and one island. Try two nights in Saigon, four on Phu Quoc or Con Dao, then one back in Saigon. Confirm domestic transport before locking in non-refundable island activities, and add more time where disruption risk calls for a larger buffer.

An adjustable eight-day, seven-night Saigon and Phu Quoc route: arrive in Saigon on day one and spend day two on museums and city walks. Fly to Phu Quoc and settle in on day three; use day four for the northern safari, day five for the southern cable car or Sunset Town, and day six for the hotel and beach. Return to Saigon for the seventh night before departing on day eight. This is an itinerary example, not a fixed tour: change the order around flights, your hotel location and weather.

For Nha Trang or Da Lat, allow a separate five- to seven-day South Central Coast and Central Highlands trip, or add overnight stops and travel days to a longer southern holiday. The road between Da Lat and Nha Trang includes mountain sections. Keep that transfer day light if you get travel-sick; choosing just one destination also reduces hotel changes.

Arrange city cars, interprovincial trips and island transport separately

A short city walk may need only a point-to-point ride. Compare a dedicated route vehicle when travelling to Can Tho or Mui Ne with luggage, several people or older relatives. Long-distance travel, driver overnights, overtime, excess mileage and specialist vehicles need a route-specific quote. Mainland city-hire terms do not cover arbitrary island travel: confirm local vehicles and meeting points separately on Phu Quoc, Con Dao or Nam Du.

For neighbourhood walks and meals, browse more Ho Chi Minh City guides. If you have chosen an overnight in Can Tho, explore Can Tho stays, transport and activities. The Vietnam island guides also cover other regions, useful when comparing coastal and island holidays.

Guide service is separate from a vehicle; confirm transport, meals, admission and tips for the chosen arrangement. Tell ChungTa Travel your arrival and departure cities, dates, party size, children’s ages, proposed overnight stops, luggage, budget and language needs. For islands, explain your comfort with boats and schedule changes. That makes it easier to identify which leg to leave out and where an extra night would help.
