Planning Northern Vietnam
Start with Hanoi, then choose between river landscapes, a bay cruise and a mountain journey.
For a first visit of four or five days, pair Hanoi with either Ninh Binh or Ha Long Bay. Six or seven days gives you more room for both the river landscapes and an overnight cruise. If Sa Pa, Ha Giang or Cao Bang is your priority, build the trip around one mountain direction and allow separately for travel from Hanoi and recovery time. Five days is not a comfortable framework for mountains, Ninh Binh and a cruise together.

Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay offer different kinds of days
Hanoi works well when you want history, neighbourhood walks and meals within the same day. Explore Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter, then choose a museum, the Temple of Literature or an afternoon café rather than leaving the city every morning. It is also a practical place to buy supplies and arrange luggage storage. A first night in Hanoi is often more restful than connecting straight from an international arrival to a night bus.
Ninh Binh is about limestone scenery, waterways and rural accommodation. Trang An and Tam Coc are different boat trips: choose one as the main activity, then add a historic site or a short walk. The Hang Mua viewpoint involves steps, so leave it out if knees or weather make the climb unsuitable. Ninh Binh railway station is not beside the sightseeing wharves, and a hotel among the fields needs its own transfer.
Ha Long Bay gives the day over to the water. A day cruise suits travellers who prefer to keep their hotel; an overnight cruise adds dinner, an evening and the following morning aboard, but also a fixed check-in commitment. Confirm the vessel, actual boarding terminal, cabin and transfer instead of navigating to a generic pin for Ha Long Bay.
Compare door-to-door transport to Ninh Binh and cruise boarding, cabins and luggage.
For more city activities and bay options, browse the Hanoi guide category and Ha Long Bay guide category. Some articles cover more than one destination; choose around your overnight bases and travel direction.

An overnight Ninh Binh stop can include the lakefront, without filling every hour
If you stay in Ninh Binh, an alternative to dinner in the countryside is a lantern-lit walk at Hoa Lu Ancient Town beside Ky Lan Lake. This cultural quarter is separate from the Dinh and Le king temples at Hoa Lu Ancient Capital. Treat daytime history and an evening walk as different outings, not a single compulsory stop.
From Tam Coc or Trang An, arrange the return transport before going out. If an easy after-dinner walk is your priority, compare actual hotel locations near Ky Lan Lake. With only one night and an early boat trip next morning, dinner close to your hotel may be the better choice. The Ninh Binh base and evening guide helps you decide.

Choose one mountain direction: Sa Pa, Ha Giang or Cao Bang
Sa Pa: a mountain-town base and walks chosen for the terrain
Sa Pa combines a town stay with the Muong Hoa Valley and village walking; Fansipan is a separate high-mountain outing. A train reaches Lao Cai, not your Sa Pa hotel, so an uphill transfer remains. Village walks can involve mud, gradients and slippery surfaces after rain. Taking a cable car does not mean a step-free journey from your hotel to the summit.
Ha Giang: the road and plateau towns are the main experience
Choose Ha Giang if you are happy to spend several days on winding roads, stopping along the way and changing accommodation. Dong Van, Ma Pi Leng and the Nho Que River each take time. A three- or four-day loop normally excludes travel to and from Hanoi, and arriving by night bus does not remove the need to rest. Do not ride yourself without suitable licensing, insurance and mountain-road experience; discuss a route by car with a local driver instead.
Cao Bang: leave room for a village night beyond the waterfall
Ban Gioc Waterfall, Nguom Ngao Cave and Khuoi Ky village make a coherent trip. Three days starting and ending in Hanoi usually means two substantial travel days. Three days counted after reaching Cao Bang allows more room for a village stay and valley stops. Raft trips depend on water conditions and cave visits involve steps. Have the organiser check documents and any permissions for extensions onto border village roads with the relevant authorities.

Mai Chau, Pu Luong and Moc Chau: rural stays without three rushed check-ins
Mai Chau suits shorter village walks, cycling and a stilt-house stay in a valley. A dinner and the following morning can matter more than another sightseeing stop. Pu Luong’s terraces climb the hillsides: a beautiful view does not guarantee a level route from your room to the restaurant. Check steps, road access and the actual walk to villages before booking.
Moc Chau is a more spread-out plateau. Pick a few tea, orchard or village visits rather than collecting every attraction. Flowers and fruit picking depend on the year and the farm’s arrangements. With only three days, choose one base in Mai Chau or Pu Luong; Moc Chau also deserves two nights of its own. Mai Chau and Pu Luong can work together on a longer break, while adding all three increases time on the road and time packing.
Compare the villages, gradients and accommodation styles.
If flowers or landscapes are the priority, browse the flower-viewing guide category and nature guide category. These topic lists also include other regions. Choose somewhere that fits this trip, then check the year’s flowering conditions and road access.

Allocate the nights before adding another destination
| Time available | Example route | Nights and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| 4–5 days | Hanoi + Ninh Binh, or Hanoi + Ha Long Bay | Stay in Hanoi at either end. Add a rural night or an overnight cruise; choosing one is more relaxed. |
| 6–7 days | Hanoi + Ninh Binh + Ha Long Bay | Allow one or two Ninh Binh nights and one cruise night, with Hanoi at the ends. Drop a stop if transfers do not line up. |
| 7–9 days | Hanoi + Sa Pa, or Hanoi + Cao Bang | Allow two or three mountain nights and the journeys there and back. Add the delta or bay only if full days remain. |
| 8–10 days | Hanoi + Ha Giang, or a slower rural journey | Count the loop separately from access travel. A rural version can use two nearby bases; it need not copy a mountain loop. |
For example, a six-night holiday with two nights in Ninh Binh and one aboard a cruise leaves only three Hanoi nights. Arrival, departure and boarding days are not entirely free sightseeing days. Place each overnight stop first, then decide whether another attraction fits. These are adjustable planning frameworks, not fixed departures or a promise of availability.
Choose a hotel for its access and the evening you want
Hanoi’s Old Quarter makes meals and walking convenient, but streets with busy evening restaurants can be noisy. West Lake or a quieter neighbourhood can suit a slower stay, with transfers to central sights and stations added separately. Around Tam Coc or Trang An, a rural stay gives you the early morning and dinner in the countryside; a hotel by Ninh Binh station offers a different setting.
Sa Pa town is convenient for supplies, while valley stays may mean slopes or extra transport. A stilt-house homestay may have dormitory sleeping, shared bathrooms or stairs. Families, older travellers and anyone with large cases should confirm vehicle access, bathroom arrangements and cooling or heating rather than relying on the label “homestay”. If you hope to leave a large suitcase in Hanoi during a cruise, check storage with the hotel and the boat operator separately, including any period after check-out.

Cooler months can be misty; summer rain changes roads and cruises
Northern Vietnam has distinct seasons. Autumn often suits city walks, and spring is another option for the plains and rural valleys. Winter can be damp, cold and foggy in Hanoi, the bay and the mountains; pack warmer layers for higher ground than for the city. Summer is hot and humid, with rain and storms that can affect cruises, mountain roads and village paths.
Rice colours, tea landscapes and flowers vary with altitude, farming cycles and the year’s temperatures. Ask your accommodation for recent nearby photographs if a particular crop stage matters. Cancel exposed paths, waterfall-edge visits or boating when heavy rain, rockfall, flooding or closures make them unsafe. In Hanoi, consider a museum, a booked water-puppet performance or meals in one neighbourhood, after checking opening arrangements. If a cruise is cancelled, sort out the boat, transfer and hotel changes before trying to replace it with a distant mountain outing.
Use meals and village visits to understand the places you stay
In Hanoi, start with pho, bun cha and coffee. Have breakfast near your accommodation and choose lunch around the neighbourhood you are visiting instead of crossing the city for every celebrated address. Egg coffee is not suitable for everyone; check ingredients if you have an egg allergy or another dietary restriction.
In valley accommodation, ask about bamboo-cooked rice, grilled dishes and seasonal vegetables; Moc Chau also offers tea and regional cooking. Hosts often plan ingredients in advance, so mention late arrival, vegetarian meals or allergies before the day. Home cooking, weaving, performances and farm activities are not automatically included every night. Villages are places where people live and work: ask before photographing people, entering a home or walking into a field, and never treat children or farm work as photographic props.
Use transport support where it makes a practical difference
With young children or older companions with sore knees, Hanoi plus one delta or bay destination can give meals, toilets and afternoon rest a predictable place in the day. Solo travellers and couples comfortable with transfers may prefer to book intercity transport themselves and add a local transfer or part-day guide. You do not necessarily need a car for the entire trip. Large cases, child seats, wheelchair storage and several hotel changes make it more important to confirm the vehicle and pick-up arrangements.
Compare accommodation, transport, admission or cabins, meals and guiding separately. City car hire has service-hour and route limits. Ha Giang, Cao Bang, Moc Chau and other long-distance journeys need a separate availability check and quote, potentially including the driver’s accommodation and an empty return. A Vietnamese-speaking driver is not a Chinese-speaking guide. Guiding without a vehicle excludes transport, meals, admission and tips; confirm hours and the route before booking.
For an itinerary enquiry, provide arrival and departure cities, dates, party size and children’s ages, luggage, budget, language and walking requirements. Custom packages start from a booking for two people; a single-person amount is a reference, not a solo departure. Room types, transport, inclusions and cancellation terms depend on the agreed proposal.
