Getting around Ho Chi Minh City | Independent travellers, families and seniors
On your first visit to Ho Chi Minh City, you do not need the same transport for your entire trip. If two of you are staying in District 1, visiting a few central sights and stopping at a cafe, walking and one or two Grab rides can work well. If you arrive at the airport with older family members, a stroller and luggage, you can book a one-way transfer first. If the next day involves several stops across the city, consider a private car with a driver. This way, you avoid paying a full day's car hire for short trips while having transport arranged for the most tiring parts of your journey.
Staying in District 1: which journeys actually need a car?
The Central Post Office and Book Street fit into the same walk, with a ride back to the hotel if it gets too hot. An afternoon visit to Cholon, or a trip back to your room for a child's nap, will add more rides. A half-day in the centre and a full day across several areas involve different transport needs. Compare costs using all the journeys you expect to make that day, rather than just the first fare.
Grab gives you flexibility for markets and cafe stops
Point-to-point rides are convenient if you want another half-hour at a market or decide to try a different cafe. Before leaving, check the pickup point, vehicle type, fare and payment method shown in the app; check the number plate before getting in. Rides may be harder to find in rain or at peak times, and fares can change. Refer to the details shown when you confirm your booking for airport charges, tolls and other fees.
You will usually need to book another ride for each leg. If you prefer to plan ahead, Grab also offers Advance Booking; available locations, vehicle types and cashless payment methods depend on what the app shows at the time. If your luggage is at the hotel and the two of you are only visiting sights around District 1, there is no need to hire a car for the whole day just for convenience.
Repeated pickups can be tiring with children or seniors
Distance is not the only reason to consider a private car. If a child needs a nap, or an older relative struggles with the heat or standing for long periods, walking to each pickup point, folding the stroller and waiting for the next car can soon take up much of your half-day. Grab can still work if you are only visiting one or two places and are happy to return to the hotel for a break. A private car becomes more worth getting a quote for when you have several stops across the city and want to pause along the way.
If there are four of you, plus large suitcases and a stroller, a four-seat car may not be suitable. When booking Grab or asking about a private car, explain the size and number of your bags. If you need a child safety seat, or someone in your group uses a wheelchair, confirm the vehicle type, how they will get in and out, and whether the required equipment can be provided. These facilities are not available in every vehicle, so check before booking.
Going straight from the airport to your hotel? A one-way ride is enough
If you are only heading to your hotel after arriving at Tan Son Nhat Airport, Grab or a pre-booked one-way transfer is sufficient. Collect your luggage, make sure your phone is online and you can log in to the app, then follow the day's directions to the pickup point. Routes through each terminal may differ, so there is no need to memorise floor or exit numbers from an old guide. If you are unsure whether you will be able to use the app after landing, arranging a one-way transfer in advance can make your arrival easier. With several bags, also check that your chosen vehicle has enough luggage space.
For a late flight, several travellers with luggage, or anyone who cannot comfortably walk far, consider booking a transfer. Confirm where the driver will meet you, what happens if your flight is delayed, and whether waiting time is charged. ChungTa Travel's southern Vietnam private car and transfer service offers airport transfers and full-day car hire options. Private car bookings come with a Vietnamese-speaking driver, with Chinese-speaking customer support to help with communication. Transport costs include fuel, tolls and parking fees; confirm the actual route, distance and vehicle type in the quote.
How do separate Grab rides compare with a full-day private car on total cost?
A morning walk near your hotel, an afternoon cafe visit and a ride back after dinner may only require one or two car journeys. Travelling between Cholon, central sights and your hotel means estimating the fare for every Grab ride, as well as the time spent waiting for another car at peak times. A full-day private car is quoted for an agreed service duration and distance, so comparing it directly with a single Grab fare will not give you a useful comparison.
ChungTa Travel's full-day car hire option is based on 10 hours / 100 km. For trips outside the city, such as Cu Chi or My Tho, or changes of route and travel between areas, reconfirm the distance and cost for your actual itinerary. Booking a car does not automatically include attraction tickets, meals or boat trips.
Vehicle use beyond 10 hours incurs an overtime charge. If you plan to return to the hotel after dinner or make long stops along the way, give your expected finishing time when booking. Whether an extension is possible, the hourly rate and excess-distance charges must be confirmed for your vehicle type and final booking.
Routes and luggage affect quotes for airport transfers and trips outside the city
Your departure hotel or terminal, planned stops and whether you will return to the same hotel affect the vehicle type and quote. For an airport pickup, also confirm how you will meet the driver and how waiting time is calculated if the flight arrives late. Journeys to Cu Chi or My Tho differ from city sightseeing, so it is best to settle your start and end points before requesting a quote.
For four people with large bags or a stroller, choose a vehicle with enough space for what you are bringing. If you need a child safety seat or someone uses a wheelchair, confirm whether suitable arrangements are possible before booking. Your private car comes with a Vietnamese-speaking driver, and Chinese-speaking customer support can help with communication, but the driver is not a sightseeing guide. For explanations of the Reunification Palace, Cu Chi Tunnels or city culture, you can separately enquire about a private Chinese-speaking guide in southern Vietnam. Guide services are charged separately from the vehicle; confirm both costs.
Frequently asked questions
Can I book Grab at Tan Son Nhat Airport?
Once you are online, check the app for the vehicle types and pickup points available that day. Airport access arrangements and vehicle availability may change; follow the on-site and in-app directions.
Will the private car driver show us around in Chinese?
Private car bookings come with a Vietnamese-speaking driver, with Chinese-speaking customer support to help with communication. Commentary at attractions is not part of the private car service. If you need a Chinese-speaking guide, enquire separately about guide services and fees.
Can I keep using the car after 10 hours?
An extension depends on confirming the driver's and vehicle's availability in advance. Use beyond 10 hours costs extra and is not included in the full-day car hire rate. Confirm the hourly charge for your vehicle type and booking.
Planning several stops across the city, or arriving with children and large bags?
When requesting a quote, share your date, group size and children's ages, number of bags, start and end points, and expected finishing time. This helps customer support assess whether a one-way transfer or a full-day private car suits your plans.
