Central Vietnam boasts a luxurious stretch of coastline: to the north lies the mist-covered Hai Van Pass, to the south is the UNESCO-listed Hoi An Ancient Town, and in the heart sits Da Nang, a city dubbed a "must-visit" by National Geographic. Just an hour's drive west lies Ba Na Hills, a French summer mountain retreat built a century ago.
Five days and four nights is just enough to complete a perfect circle of these three spots—landing and exploring the night markets on Day 1, visiting the Marble Mountains and Linh Ung Pagoda on Day 2, walking the Golden Bridge on Day 3, soaking in the lanterns and river night views in Hoi An on Day 4, and taking a final morning walk along My Khe Beach on Day 5. This independent Vietnam travel guide covers your itinerary, budget, transportation, accommodation, and tips to avoid common pitfalls.

Getting to Know Central Vietnam: Da Nang, Hoi An, and Ba Na Hills
A modern harbor city, a 600-year-old trading port, and a French mountain town in the clouds—all within 40 kilometers of each other.
Da Nang
Vietnam's fourth-largest city, with a population of about 1.2 million, traces its roots back to the Champa Kingdom. It is the largest deep-water port in central Vietnam and the most convenient gateway to the region: the airport is just 15 minutes from the city center, 40 minutes from Hoi An, and an hour from Ba Na Hills. The city features 30 kilometers of white sandy beaches, the Dragon Bridge spanning the Han River, vibrant night lighting, and a rapidly growing cluster of coastal resorts. Central Vietnam hosts three of Vietnam's five UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Complex of Hué Monuments, Hoi An Ancient Town, and the My Son Sanctuary.
Hoi An
An international trading port from the 16th and 17th centuries, where Chinese, Japanese, and Dutch merchants once gathered. The ancient town still preserves its original street layout, timber-frame houses, guild halls, and the Japanese Covered Bridge. Listed as a World Heritage site in 1999, it is most enchanting after sunset: cars are prohibited, homes hang silk lanterns, and small boats drift along the Hoai River releasing paper lanterns. On the 14th day of every lunar month, the entire ancient town turns off its electric lights, leaving only the soft glow of lanterns.
Ba Na Hills
Standing at an altitude of about 1,400 meters, this was a summer retreat during the French colonial era. The summit features a reconstructed French village, a Gothic church, wine cellars, and an indoor amusement park, with temperatures 7–8 degrees cooler than at the base. It gained global fame with the 2018 completion of the Golden Bridge, where two massive stone hands lift a 150-meter golden walkway above the clouds. The cable car ride to the top takes about 20 minutes and has held multiple world records.

Three Common Pre-trip Questions
1. Should I stay in Da Nang or Hoi An? For a 5D4N trip, we suggest "3 nights in Da Nang + 1 night in Hoi An." Hoi An is most beautiful at night, and staying overnight allows you to see it after the day-trippers leave. If moving luggage is a hassle, staying in Da Nang for the entire trip and visiting Hoi An as a day trip is also viable.
2. When to schedule Ba Na Hills? Mid-trip is best, and try to avoid weekends. Mountain weather can change instantly; if heavy rain is forecast, you can swap it with another day in your itinerary.
3. Do I need a tour guide? Without an explanation, the caves at the Marble Mountains, the guild halls of Hoi An, and the Cham ruins at My Son might just look like photo ops. Hiring a Chinese-speaking guide significantly enhances the depth of your experience, which is especially beneficial if traveling with elders.
